In the template editor, canvases let you offer one template in several sizes, for example square and portrait. Users fill in the input fields only once and choose the size they need in the design generator.

Each canvas is its own variant of your template: it has its own elements and its own layout. All canvases share the input fields. The first canvas is the default canvas, and you can take over changes from it into the others.

This takes four steps:

1. Add a canvas in the template editor.
2. Take over later changes from the default canvas.
3. Delete canvases you no longer need.
4. Test the sizes in the design generator.

## Add a canvas

1. Click the size of the open canvas on the left of the toolbar, for example **1080×1080**. This is the canvas picker. A list of all canvases of your template opens.

   ![Toolbar with the canvas picker highlighted and open: the 1080×1080 canvas and Add canvas.](https://imagedelivery.net/mudX-CmAqIANL8bxoNCToA/help/KB-canvases-04/public){width="404"}

2. Click **Add canvas**. The **Add canvas** popup opens.

   > **Add canvas is greyed out?** You have reached your plan's template limit. Each canvas counts toward the template limit. Templates in **Drafts**, **Archive** or **Presets** don't count toward the limit. See [How templates and assets count towards your limits](https://bluepic.io/help/account-management/template-limits).

3. Choose the size of the new canvas:

   - For a common size: Choose it under **Preset**. Sizes the template already has are greyed out.
   - For your own size: Type the width under **Size** in **W** and the height in **H**, in pixels.

   > **Create is greyed out?** The template already has a canvas of this size. Every canvas needs its own size, because the size is how it is addressed. Type a different size.

4. Click **Create**. The new canvas is now added and open. It is a copy of the canvas that was open before.

   ![Toolbar with the canvas picker open and highlighted: the 1080×1080 and 1080×1920 canvases and Add canvas below.](https://imagedelivery.net/mudX-CmAqIANL8bxoNCToA/help/KB-canvases-07/public?v=f2d6f405 "Use the canvas picker to switch between sizes."){width="403"}

5. Arrange the elements so they fit the new size. Whatever you move or style here only changes this canvas.
6. Check on the new canvas that all elements with input fields are visible and fit.

You change a canvas's size later in the properties panel under **Canvas**, see [Create a template: set its size and export format](https://bluepic.io/help/template-management/template-setup-and-settings).

## Take over changes from the default canvas

When you change the default canvas, the other canvases don't change by themselves. You take over the changes for each canvas separately.

1. Choose the canvas that should get the changes in the canvas picker.
2. Click an empty spot on the canvas. The properties panel shows the buttons **Sync from Default** and **Re-clone from Default** under **Canvas**.

   > **The two buttons are missing?** They only appear on a canvas that is not the default canvas. Switch to a different canvas in the canvas picker.

3. Click one of the two buttons. A popup asks you to confirm.

   - For changes that keep your adjustments: **Sync from Default**
     - Whatever you adjusted on this canvas stays as it is.
     - Whatever you didn't adjust here takes on the values of the default canvas. This also applies to the background and the guide lines.
     - New elements of the default canvas are added.
     - Elements you deleted here stay deleted.
     - Elements that were deleted on the default canvas disappear here too, unless you adjusted them here.
   - For a fresh start: **Re-clone from Default**
     - Replaces all elements of this canvas with a copy of the default canvas. Your adjustments are lost. The size stays.

4. Click **Sync** or **Re-clone** in the popup. The canvas now has the changes of the default canvas.

> **Caution:** **Sync from Default** and **Re-clone from Default** can't be undone. If you still need your work on this canvas, duplicate the template first.

## Delete a canvas

1. Choose a different canvas than the one you want to delete in the canvas picker. You can't delete the canvas that is open.
2. Click the canvas picker again. The list of all canvases opens.
3. Click the trash can on the right of the row of the canvas you want to delete. The **Delete canvas** popup opens.

   ![Open canvas picker with two canvases; the trash can in the row of the canvas that is not open is highlighted.](https://imagedelivery.net/mudX-CmAqIANL8bxoNCToA/help/KB-canvases-06/public){width="399"}

4. Click **Delete**. The canvas is now deleted.

A template always keeps at least one canvas. If you delete the default canvas, the first of the remaining canvases becomes the new default canvas. Campaign links that point to a deleted canvas open the default canvas.

> **Caution:** You can't restore a deleted canvas. Render URLs from **Automate** address a canvas by its size: if you delete it or change its size, they return an error (404). This doesn't apply when **Resizable** is on under **Advanced**.

## Test the sizes in the design generator

The design generator is the page where users fill in your template and export it. If the template comes in several sizes, they choose one there first.

1. Open your template's link in a new browser tab. [Publish a template link: share your design generator](https://bluepic.io/help/template-management/share-template-link) explains how to get a link. The **Select format** popup shows all sizes.
2. Click a size in the **Select format** popup. The design opens in this size. The address in your browser now ends with this canvas (`/<slug>/<templateId>/<canvasId>`).

   ![Select format popup in the design generator with two sizes of the same template.](https://imagedelivery.net/mudX-CmAqIANL8bxoNCToA/help/KB-canvases-03/public){width="700"}

3. Type test values into the input fields. Check that the design fits in every size.

To send users straight to one size, copy the address from your browser after step 2 and share it.
