A template has two parts to set up: creating it, and adjusting its settings. This article covers both.

## Creating a template

Templates live inside folders. Select the folder you want the new template to go in, then click **Create Template**. The dialog has two tabs: **Empty Template** and **Presets**.

> If **Create Template** is greyed out, you've reached the maximum number of templates for your plan. See [Template limits](https://bluepic.io/help/account-management/template-limits).

### Start from a blank canvas (Empty Template)

The **Empty Template** tab gives you a blank canvas at the size you choose:

- **Name**: what the template is called in your library and in any campaign with more than one template. You can rename it later (see [Rename, duplicate, move or delete templates](https://bluepic.io/help/template-management/rename-duplicate-move-delete-templates)).
- **Category** *(optional)*: a label you can use to organise templates in campaigns with more than one template.
- **Size**: pick one of the standard sizes from the empty presets, or type a custom **Width** and **Height** in pixels. The default is 1080 × 1080.

Click **Create Template** when you're ready.

### Start from a preset (Presets)

The **Presets** tab lets you start from a ready-made template instead of a blank canvas. Pick one as your starting point and edit it from there.

## Template settings

With a template open in the editor, open its **Settings** panel to change the options below. They belong to the template itself, so they carry through to every design made from it.

### Size

Adjust **Width** and **Height** in pixels, then click **Apply size**. The canvas resizes only once you apply. Sizes up to 7016 × 9933 px are supported. If you need something larger, get in touch with support.

### Format

The **Format** is the file type the template exports as: PNG, JPEG, GIF, PDF or SVG.

### Category

An optional label. Templates that share a category are grouped together when they're shared in a campaign.

### Caption

A default caption for this template, passed along when one of its designs is shared to a social network.
