Group elements: move and arrange them together

Last updated October 22, 2026

In the template editor, you combine several elements into a group. The elements then move and scale together and keep their arrangement. With a layout, the group also arranges its elements by itself, one below the other or side by side, even when a text gets longer.

This takes three steps:

  1. Create the group on the canvas.
  2. Arrange the group's elements in the properties panel.
  3. Ungroup it again in the layers panel if you need to.

Create a group

  1. Click the first element on the canvas.
  2. Hold Shift and click the other elements. All of them are now selected.
  3. Press Cmd + G (Windows: Ctrl + G). The elements are now a group, and the group is selected. It has its own row in the layers panel. You also find the Group command in the context menu: right-click one of the elements in the layers panel.
Layers panel with the new group expanded: the group row and the two texts indented below it.
  4. Drag the group to another spot on the canvas. Check that all elements move along.

Arrange the elements in the group

In the properties panel, you set the properties of the selected element, here the group's.

  1. Click the group on the canvas. Its properties appear in the properties panel.
  2. Click Layout in the properties panel. The section opens.
  3. Click a layout under Layout Mode:
    • None: you place the elements freely.
    • Column: the elements sit one below the other.
    • Row: the elements sit side by side.

With Column or Row, the group is now a layout group. When one element grows, the others move along.
You can't click Column or Row?

The group still contains a group without a layout. A hint under Layout Mode names it. Turn that inner group into a layout group first, then the outer one.

Layout section of a group with Layout Mode Column next to the group on the canvas: "Hear me speak" and the session title are stacked.
  4. Type the space between the elements under Gap.
  5. Check the layout with texts of different lengths.

To give the group a background, use Fill Color in the Appearance section. Under Background Clip you choose where it goes: Group Frame is one box around the whole group, Shape follows the shape of the elements. Padding makes the background larger by a distance, and the button next to it sets each side separately.

Ungroup

  1. Choose in the layers panel what you want to take out of the group:
    • The whole group: click the group.
    • Only some elements: click the small arrow to the left of the group, then click the elements. Hold Shift to select several.
  2. Press Cmd + Shift + G (Windows: Ctrl + Shift + G).
    • For the whole group: the group is gone, and its elements are single elements again.
    • For some elements: they now sit outside the group. The group stays with the remaining elements.

In the context menu, the two commands are called Ungroup and Leave group.
