Remove background: cut out photos from users automatically

In the template editor, Remove background cuts out the subject of an image automatically: the photo's background becomes transparent, and your design shows behind it. This also applies to every photo users upload into this image in the design generator, for example a portrait for a speaker design.

There are three steps:

  1. Turn on Remove background in the template editor.
  2. Make the image changeable with an input field in the template editor.
  3. Test the result in the design generator.

Turn on Remove background

Remove background is a property of the image, not of the input field. You turn it on in the properties panel.

  1. Click the image on the canvas or in the layers panel. The properties panel shows its properties.
  2. Click the Remove background checkbox in the Image section. The subject is now cut out, and where the background was, you see what lies behind the image in your design. If nothing is there, Studio shows a checkerboard pattern: that spot is transparent.

  3. Check on the canvas that something suitable lies behind the image, for example a shape in your brand colour.

Make the image changeable

For users to upload their own photo, the image needs an image input field. Create an input field: let users change a text or image shows how. Every photo users upload there is cut out automatically. Images that users pick from Pexels or a Google Drive Folder stay as they are.

Test the result in the design generator

The design generator is the page where users fill in your template and export their design. Here you see how the cutout looks with photos from users.

  1. Click Share at the top right of the toolbar and then Publish Template Link. If you have published the template before, the menu item is called Open Template Campaign. A popup with the share settings opens. Your template is now reachable through a link.
  2. Click Copy URL and open the link in a new browser tab. The design generator opens. On a computer, the input fields are on the left and the design is on the right.
  3. Upload a photo in the image input field. The design shows the subject without its background.
  4. Look at the result with different photos: with a calm and a busy background, with loose hair, with several people. Check that the design looks good in every case.
