Create a template: set its size and export format

Last updated October 22, 2026

In a folder, you create a new template and choose its size. In the template editor, you then decide which file type (PNG, JPEG, PDF, etc.) users export their design as.

Folder view with the folder YLW Summit and its five templates, the folder list on the left and Create Template at the top right.

This takes two steps:

  1. Create the template in a folder.
  2. Set the size and export format in the template editor.

Create the template

  1. Click the folder the template should go into, in your list of folders on the left.
  2. Click Create Template at the top right. The Create Template popup opens.
The Create Template button is missing?

You can't create templates in the Archive folder. Choose a different folder.

    Create Template is greyed out?

You have reached your plan's template limit. Hover over the button to see how much of it is in use. Delete or archive templates, or raise the template limit under Billing on Pro. In a team, you can also create the template in Drafts: templates there don't count toward the template limit. See How templates and assets count towards your limits.

Create Template button at the top right of a folder, highlighted.
  3. You can start with an empty design or use one of the preset designs. To do so, click the tab of a preset category at the top of the popup. The designs of that category appear below. Empty designs are in the Empty tab. If your team has its own presets, the first tab carries your team's name.
  4. Click a design. Your template starts with that design and its size.
Create Template popup with Name, Width, Height and Slides, the category tabs and the empty designs in the Empty tab, with Import from IDML and Upload template at the top.
  5. Only in the Empty tab: Type your own size in pixels under Width and Height if you need one. The fields first show the size of the chosen design.
  6. Only in the Empty tab: Type under Slides how many images the template consists of, for example for a carousel. The default is 1, the maximum 10. Width and Height apply to each slide: 5 slides of 1080 × 1080 px make a template that is 5400 px wide.
A red note appears in the popup and Create Template is greyed out?

The size is too large. The width and height of the whole template may each be at most 30,000 px. With several slides, the widths of all slides add up. Reduce Width, Height or Slides.

  7. Type a name for the template under Name.
  8. Click Create Template. The template is now created in the folder, and the template editor opens.

Set the size and export format

In the template editor, you design your template. You set its size, export format and background in the properties panel on the left while no element is selected.

  1. Click an empty spot on the canvas. Now no element is selected, and the properties panel shows the template's settings: Canvas, Format, Fill and Advanced.
Properties panel with no element selected: Canvas with W and H, Format, Fill and Advanced.
  2. Type the width under Canvas in W and the height in H, in pixels.
  3. Press Enter or click outside the field. The canvas now has the new size. There is no button to apply it.
    You see Size too big?

Bluepic only renders designs up to an area of 7016 × 9933 px. The canvas doesn't take a larger size. Type a smaller size. If you need more, click Contact us in the note.

    You see Size already used?

Another canvas of this template already has this size. Every canvas needs its own size. Type a different size. Canvases: offer multiple sizes in one template explains more.

  4. Choose the file type users export under Format. From now on, Bluepic exports the template in this format.
Format menu with the file types PNG, JPEG, GIF, PDF, SVG, MP4, MOV and WEBM.
  5. Tick Background fill under Fill if your template should have a background. You choose its color below. Without the tick, the background is transparent.
  6. Check that the canvas has the right size and background.

Advanced has two settings that most templates don't need:

  • Enforce server-side rendering: exports are always made on Bluepic's servers instead of in the user's browser.
  • Resizable: the template can be requested in any size through a render URL, and the layout adapts. See Automate: create images by URL and API.

Categories and social media captions are not part of the template but of the campaign: you set categories under Generator Theme → Categories and captions under Social Connections → Captions. Team campaigns have no captions. See Create a campaign: share several templates in one design generator.
